The Walking Simulator
English Language Arts: 30 Day Unit
A walking simulator is an adventure game focused on gradual exploration and discovery through observation, with little in the way of action. The gameplay focuses solely on telling a story. This unit will help get students thinking about and noticing writing strategies in places they have not considered before. This specific unit was created with the intent to hep high school students prepare for the New York Regents Exam in English Language Arts. This can, however, be easily taught to any high school, and potentially middle school, ELA course.
Gone Home and What Remains of Edith Finch are both walking simulators. They are also among the most critically acclaimed games of this genre. They contain rich narratives that can only be told as a video game. Both games are also a great introduction to video game medium for people who don't have a lot of gaming experience.
